The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that takes place on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. The festival has a history of over 2,000 years and is celebrated in many countries, including China, Taiwan Province of China, Hong Kong, and other areas with significant Chinese populations.
The Dragon Boat Festival is known for its lively dragon boat races, where teams of rowers paddle in long, narrow boats decorated like dragons. The races are held in rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water, and they attract both participants and spectators. The dragon boat races are not only a thrilling sporting event but also a way to pay tribute to Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman of ancient China.
The festival is closely associated with Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period of Chinese history. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who was exiled and eventually committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River. According to legend, local villagers rushed out in their boats to save him or retrieve his body, and they also threw rice dumplings called zongzi into the water to prevent fish from eating his body. These actions are said to have given rise to the traditions of dragon boat races and eating zongzi during the festival.
Apart from dragon boat races and eating zongzi, other customs and activities are associated with the Dragon Boat Festival. People often hang up pouches of herbs or medicinal plants, such as mugwort and calamus, to ward off evil spirits and diseases. They also wear colorful silk threads to protect themselves from evil spirits. Additionally, the festival is a time for families to get together and spend time with loved ones, and it's also common to see children wearing colorful silk threads and small silk pouches.
The Dragon Boat Festival is not only celebrated in China but has gained international recognition as well. It has become a popular cultural event in many countries, and dragon boat races are held in various locations around the world, attracting participants from different backgrounds.
